Pediatric Cancer takes quite a toll on the entire family and one of the parents will often find they must choose between his or her job or being able to be with their sick child. The medical bills are astounding not to mention the expense of gas back and forth, food and this is on top of the emotional trauma they are facing as a family. To ask for help is such a humbling experience and Riley’s Army knows that when a family reaches the point of asking for financial help, they are truly in need, the struggle to feed, pay the bills, and care for themselves can be overwhelming, a little help goes a long way.
In 2014, our emergency fund provided a lifetime limit to each family of $1,000 and has been used for rent, utilities, and insurance, mortgage and car payments. Riley’s Army provided assistance to over 26 families with over $11,845 in financial assistance. The number of newly diagnosed children are growing exponentially each year. To donate towards this fund, please click on Donate Now button at the top of this page.
To provide comfort for our newly diagnosed cancer patients during their long hospital stays and hours and hours of treatment. Riley’s Army volunteers will create Comfort Backpacks filled with a variety of items that we believe will bring comfort to these young patients. The backpacks will be filled with both activity based items as well as “comfort” items that will make their hospital room seem more like home. We will order the backpacks and have the Riley’s Army logo embroidered on each one. Each pack will be tailored to meet individual needs and likes. Each pack will include an age appropriate craft or activity, pens and pencils, a handmade personalized pillowcase, a magnetic picture frame (so they can bring along a picture of their pet or siblings), i-tunes cards and ear buds for the older children as well as a journal, a Beanie baby, a Riley’s Army shirt and bracelet, a disposable camera (to capture the journey or maybe just document various visitors), window markers and decals, a favorite snack and some food cards from local restaurants..
These backpacks will be delivered by Riley’s Army volunteers and that will also give them an opportunity to visit with these children who often go days without visitors. Once a child is newly diagnosed and becomes part of Riley’s Army, we find out a little bit about their hobbies, likes and dislikes, favorite sports teams etc. We will take that opportunity to build a backpack just for them. Much like JDRF’s shoe and Children Miracle Network’s balloon; Riley’s Army now has a beautiful representation of a butterfly. Riley, herself, has and forever will be the butterfly in our logo. We could not think of a better way to spread awareness than through Riley’s butterfly. We have proudly watched it flutter through the local Papa John’s stores with much success this past year. We are excited to see it float around Greenville and surrounding counties. And in an effort to promote awareness of pediatric cancer- we are asking local businesses, churches, and organizations to assist us with our mission.
For a $1 donation, you will be able to write their name (“in honor of” or “in memory of”) on a Riley’s Army Butterfly to help raise awareness of pediatric cancer. We will provide you with 250 or 500 of our precut butterflies for your office, business, church, or organization to promote. Please contact Kimber Stone at 919-608-8421 or email@example.com or mail the enclosed form to Riley’s Army PO Box 720, Winterville for your bundle of butterflies.
